Why I Give
Our donors and volunteers make the community a better place for our children and families. In our series, Why I Give, we put the spotlight on some of the generous individuals helping to move our communities forward.
Here's an insider's look into why Ellen Kelleher has shared her time and talents to further our mission since 2016.
Why do you volunteer/donate?
Just knowing the important role Acenda plays in helping people makes me want to help. At the time I started, I only knew what my daughter Nancy’s role was as a therapist, which involved reunifying families fighting their way back from addiction. It seemed like such a worthwhile mission and I wanted to help when and where I could.
When did you get involved with Acenda?
My first contact with Acenda was when I retired about four years ago. It was Robins' Nest then and my daughter Nancy suggested I get involved. I had free time and was looking for volunteer opportunities and she told me about several volunteer projects offered through Acenda.
What motivates you to stay involved? In your opinion, what is the more important work that Acenda does?
The work Acenda does is so vital. Life is difficult at best, but when families face serious and unexpected setbacks such as addiction, mental and physical health problems, and unemployment, their struggle can be overwhelming and seem insurmountable. Acenda tries to fill in the mortar needed to rebuild lives and families, giving them that helping hand out of what must seem at times a hopeless pit.
What do you hope Acenda will achieve in the near future? In the long term?
Acenda has an awesome mission and I believe their goal now and in the future would be to reach as many people and families in need, providing the necessary help and pathway to a better life and a brighter future.
Why is being a donor so important to you?
I’ll never forget the mom who cried tears of gratitude after picking out toys for her little one at the holiday workshop. She said it made their Christmas. I was grateful that Acenda was there for her and that in some small way I was able to help. I would encourage anyone with the time and willingness to lend a helping hand to look into the various volunteer projects at Acenda. You’ll be so glad you did!
Thank you, Ellen, for sharing your Acenda story! If you are interested in getting involved with Acenda visit our get involved page or email development@acendahealth.org for upcoming opportunities.
