Steps Towards Independence
Acenda’s Steps Towards Independence program offers transitional housing in Salem City, NJ for young adults ages 18–20 who are aging out of foster care or experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. The program provides guidance and life-skills support to help young adults build independence and work toward long-term housing stability.

Eligibility
To be eligible for Steps Toward Independence services:
- Must be a young adult ages 18-20 who is aging out of foster care, or at risk or currently experiencing homelessness.
- Must complete a referral with an Acenda Supportive Housing Intake worker
- Youth must also contact PerformCare Adolescent Housing HUB by calling 1-877-652-7624 and obtain a HUB Referral Number.

The young adult must complete a referral with an Acenda Supportive Housing Intake worker and contact PerformCare Adolescent Housing HUB by calling 1-877-652-7624 and obtain a HUB Referral Number.

Initial Meeting
Once the young adult is referred to the program, they will meet with an Independent Living Coordinator (ILC) who will complete all necessary paperwork and begin identifying individualized goals.

Moving Forward with Care
Services will be offered both in person and virtually, and may be provided in individual or group settings, either in the home or within the community. The meetings take place once a week for a minimum of one hour. As long as the young adult remains in good standing, they can remain in the program until their 21st birthday and the ILC will help prepare them for long-term housing stability.

What are the program rules and guidelines?
There is a Steps Towards Independence Handbook that list house rules such as:
- No overnight guests
- Apartments are for single individuals only
- Actively looking for or maintaining employment or enrolled in school
- Attending scheduled meetings
- Clients enrolled in the program are free to come and go from their apartment as needed.
