Functional Family Therapy

Functional Family Therapy is an evidence-based, in-home family therapy model that supports youth ages 11–18 and their families who are experiencing behavioral and emotional challenges at home or in their communities. The program focuses on strengthening relationships and teaching practical skills that promote understanding, stability, and positive change at home and in the community.

    Identifying and treating anxiety disorders.

    Helping to identify and treat mood disorders, like bipolar disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

    Providing support to navigate traumatic events and aid in the healing process.

  • Behavioral Challenges in Children and Teens

    Helping children and teens manage behavioral challenges while building healthy coping skills.

  • Family Conflict

    Providing guidance and support to resolve family conflicts and strengthen relationships.

  • Justice/legal Involvement

    Supporting you as you navigate the legal system and pursue justice. 

  • Substance Abuse

    Offering support and treatment options for managing substance use and promoting recovery.

  • Parenting Support

    Offering guidance and resources to help parents navigate challenges, strengthen relationships, and promote healthy family dynamics.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Functional Family Services you must: 

  • Be between the ages of 11 and 18. 
  • Live with the family and reside in Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem, Atlantic, or Capy May Counties. 
  • Have an IQ score over 70 and can not have an active Autism Spectrum diagnosis. 
  • Not have an active UCMO case manager 
  • Be psychiatrically stable 

What to Expect 

  • Reaching Out

    To reach out for services in Gloucester and Salem Counties call (856) 723-4531.

    To reach out for services in Atlantic and Cape May Counties call (856) 725-9282. 

    Families will be contacted within 48 hours of referral being made or assigned. 

  • Arranging Services

    After receiving the referral, families will be contacted by phone from a program staff member. Clinical therapy will begin right away with the first session. Sessions take place in the home and are 1 hour each week.  

  • Moving Forward with Care

    Functional Family Therapy services will work with families until their goals are met, typically lasting about 9-12 weeks.

FAQ’s

How quickly do services start once a referral form is submitted? 

You will receive a call within 48 hours of referral to complete an intake. In the event of a waitlist, the Program Director or Supervisor will inform the family of wait time for services to begin.

Do therapists meet with my child individually for sessions? 

No, Functional Family Therapy is a family model that needs the youth as well as one parent or guardian in every session. 

Where do therapy sessions take place? 

Functional Family Therapy takes place in the home weekly for 1 hour and typically last between 9-12 weeks depending on the needs of the family.

How long can I receive Functional Family Therapy services?

Services are typically 9-12 sessions. However, services can be shorter or longer based on the needs of the family.

How much do Functional Family Therapy services cost?

Functional Family Therapy services are free.

Will I be provided with support at the end of services?

Staff ensure families are linked with appropriate services at the end of treatment.
