“Oceanside II Family Success Center would like to highlight a mother who first came into the center seeking mental health resources for her son and a welcoming place for her family as they were settling in a new community having immigrated into USA just 2 months ago. The family speaks only Spanish, and mother expressed her concern about her son’s education in an American school. She values parent involvement in education and worked in the school district in her native county but felt unprepared and overwhelmed when it came to the American education system. Speaking through a staff interpreter, the center director engaged the mother in a heartfelt conversation and coached her in navigating the intricacies of her new family-school-community relationships. The mother recognized that she had the strengths needed to continue to provide for her family and to work collaboratively with her son’s teachers to support him at home and in school. Most of all she appreciated the encouragement and social connection she felt to the center and the staff. Soon after, she told us that wanted to help other families feel empowered, too, as she was empowered since she started coming to Oceanside II FSC. After only one meeting about this new leadership opportunity, she quickly became a dedicated volunteer—supporting our center’s 10th Birthday Celebration, connecting with other parents in the center, and emerging as a parent leader. Now well connected with her community, in collaboration with the staff, she is planning a parent education workshop called “From Home to the Classroom: Always Connected” scheduled for January 2026. “
