Don't Give Up!
The phrase "Don't give up!" is easier said than done, especially when struggling with mental illness. Unfortunately, life isn't all sunshine and smiles. Falling into a depression and wanting to give up is understandable. The feelings of depression, sadness, or anxiety can haunt you so much that it can cause you to want to give up on the day, yourself, your life goals, etc. Try not to allow this negative mentality to define you, but rather acknowledge and challenge those thoughts.
It's a hard battle to overcome, but there are so many reasons you should fight to persevere. Giving up can lead to missed opportunities. It can also affect your mental health by being disappointed in yourself.
Here are 4 motivational tips when you're feeling down:
- Reframe your thinking. That very first negative thought is your immediate reaction. While it takes time to change that initial reaction, you can control your response. Acknowledge the thought and reframe it by thinking positively.
- Take a body and mind scan. When experiencing these emotions, sit in the feeling and take note of how your body and mind feel in that moment.
- Remind yourself that the feeling is momentary and manageable. It may be uncomfortable, but it is temporary.
- Ask for help. Don't feel shame for needing a helping hand sometimes. Reach out to a friend, family member, or therapist.
Challenge the day with positivity and excitement! Escape a negative mentality and try to focus on your goals. Coping mechanisms work differently for everyone, so try some out to find the best fit for you. Remember, “The greater your storm, the brighter your rainbow".
