Tips to Improve Mental Wellness

January Marks Mental Wellness Month

Our mental health changes each day depending on many factors, including our physical health, things going on at work, our stress level, and even our relationships with others. Maintaining mental wellness is not always easy, but it is important to do

The World Health Organization (WHO) describes mental wellness as a “state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” The key is to be proactive in taking care of our mental well-being before issues arise.

With January being Mental Wellness Month, we are offering some helpful tips to start improving your mental wellness:

1. Focus not only on mental health, but physical health as well

To achieve mental wellness, you need to feel healthy and strong physically.  If you have a medical condition, it’s important to receive appropriate care as the two go hand-in-hand.

2. Have a positive attitude

Although it can be hard to do sometimes, positivity is very important in relationship to your mental health. Thinking good thoughts and being content with your life can make you a happier, healthier person.

3. Develop friendships

Having strong relationships with others can help you maintain mental wellness. Friends add enjoyment to our lives and provide comfort in times of need, help prevent loneliness and give you a chance to offer needed companionship, too.

4. Exercise

Studies have shown that regular exercise can increase energy and release neurotransmitters in the brain that help reduce anxiousness and even depression.  Whether it’s taking a walk in a park, a run on the treadmill, yoga, or an exercise class at the gym, making time for exercise can improve your overall well-being.

5. Start a hobby

When you are doing something you enjoy, you feel better. Knitting, cooking, art class or participating in a sport, are all wonderful ways to stay busy, exercise the brain, and have been proven to stop issues like depression and anxiety. Hobbies allow you to take a break while still having a sense of purpose. They are also great ways to meet new people that have the same interests as you!
