Program Feature: Youth Mentoring Programs

Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations.

We are proud to offer two dynamic mentoring programs that offer life-enhancing services and opportunities to youth living throughout our communities.  Our Adolescent Mentoring Program matches youth ages 14 to 20 living in Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties with a professional mentor, which our Connect to Mentoring Program works with youth living in Burlington County.

Alex's Story

Growing up with multiple foster families, Alex never had the opportunity to develop a strong relationship with an influential adult. His lack of guidance and discipline contributed to behavior problems in school and difficulty interacting with his classmates and peers. His DCP&P caseworker had been in touch with the staff at Robins' Nest and learned that there were openings for youth in the Adolescent Mentoring Program.  Alex enrolled in the program and was matched with Steve, a local high school teacher who was interested in giving back to the youth in his community.

Alex was hesitant to talk with Steve about his challenges at first, but after meeting him for the first time and playing a game of basketball together, Alex felt comfortable opening up and discussing some very personal issues.  Over the next year, Alex and Steve spent time together twice a month and frequently went to the movies, grabbed dinner together, and continued to play basketball.  During this time, Alex's grades improved, and he even joined the high school basketball team, allowing him to develop new relationships with the classmates on his team.  After Steve's mentor commitment ended, he and Alex still made time in their busy schedules to get together and catch up on each other's lives.

"Steve is really the first adult that I've ever looked up to," said Alex. "I am thankful for our friendship and for the guidance and support he has given me.  I am proud to call him one of my closest friends."
