The purpose of the program is to provide Independent Living by assisting homeless youth and youth leaving the child welfare system, foster care or homeless shelters to make a successful transition to self-sufficient living and to prevent long-term dependency on social services by providing permanent housing, life skills, and support services which meet their developmental needs. Recognizing that the target population needs help in all spheres of their lives, the program comprehensively addresses barriers confronting this population in the key life domains of housing, education, viable employment, and medical and emotional well-being. Therefore, the program, which encourages positive youth development, has the following five components: (1) Housing component which provides a stable, safe and healthy environment. (2). Skill development component which assists the young person in developing both the life-skills and the personal characteristics needed to enable them to live independently. (3)Educational/ vocational component which prepares the young adult for meaningful employment with a strong emphasis on career objectives. (4).Career planning/employment component, which assists young adults to obtain and maintain viable employment. (5). Physical/mental health component, which meets the young adult’s physical and emotional health needs. The target population is homeless youth or youth aging out of the child welfare system ages 18-21 residing in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester or Salem counties. Consistent with the supportive housing model, residents are considered tenants and will have their own lease. Residents can remain as long as they fulfill the obligations of their lease.
