Self Care is Not Selfish

International Self Care Day 2021

American poet Audre Lorde once said, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare". This quote perfectly embodies the essence of International Self Care Day, celebrated each year on July 24th. Over the past year, society has realized the importance of prioritizing one's mental health. Putting yourself first in situations and setting healthy boundaries is not a selfish act. Treat yourself—you deserve it!

Self care can range from something small like making time for yourself each day, creating a routine to wash your face every night, to something larger like a complete lifestyle change that embraces habits and hobbies that help you feel fulfilled.

Here are 4 simple techniques to practice self care:

1. Journal
Journaling is a great way to tap into your emotions and act as a cathartic tool to process what you're feeling. This is also a great way to express gratitude. Try completing a reflective journal prompt first thing every morning or before going to bed every night.

2. Spend time with loved ones
Self care isn't confined to individual activities. In fact, taking care of your social wellbeing is a huge part of self care. Carve out time in your schedule to check in with friends and family.

3. Take care of your hygiene
Your mind and body are inextricably connected. When you take care of your physical body, your mental wellbeing improves. Start a new skincare routine, take a bubble bath, or start flossing! Switching up or revamping any part of your hygiene routine is a great way to take care of yourself.

4. Exercise & eat healthy
We've heard it all before: exercise and eat healthy for a better life. However, it doesn't have to be so cut and dry. Try out a new form of exercise like yoga or cycling, or just simply go for a walk once a day. Don't restrict yourself to a diet, but learn what food best fuels your lifestyle.
