October brings the opportunity to reconnect with our community and give back to those around us. With school back up again, the harvest festivities beginning, and holiday season approaching, the need to embrace community engagement grows.
Community engagement, “seeks to better engage the community to achieve long-term and sustainable outcomes, processes, relationships, discourse, decision-making, or implementation” (PennState). Below are multiple ways to get involved with your local community.
Volunteer for a Cause
Giving your time can make a tangible difference in your community. Look for a local food bank, volunteer at an animal shelter, or participate in a park cleanup. Check out VolunteerMatch to find organizations that match what you are looking for. You can easily search using your city or zip code, a keyword, and cause areas.
Support Local Businesses
Local businesses are a vital part of the community. Show your support by shopping at small businesses, attending farmers' markets, and participating in local events. Don’t forget that Small Business Saturday is coming up November 25th!
Organize Community Events
Consider planning or participating in events that bring your community together. This could range from a neighborhood block party to a charity run. These events not only foster a sense of togetherness but also raise awareness for important causes.
Our Spirit of the Holidays event is coming up. Acenda collects toys from many different businesses, organizations and community members across New Jersey to deliver holiday presents to families in need.
Back-to-School Drives
Help children start the school year on the right foot by contributing to back-to-school drives. Donating school supplies or backpacks ensures that all students have the tools they need for success. At Acenda Integrated Health, we just finished up our 2023 Backpack Drive, where we donated backpacks and school supplies to over 500 children in the South Jersey area.
Environmental Stewardship
This time marks a transition in nature, making it an ideal time for environmental initiatives. Organize tree planting by mid-October, participate in river cleanups, or promote eco-friendly practices within your community. Engage in community gardening projects that not only promote sustainable living but also provide fresh produce for those in need.
October is a month of change, renewal, and connection. You can contribute to the well-being of those around you and enrich your own life by engaging with your community. Let's make this October a time of active involvement, empathy, and positive change within our communities. Together, we can create a lasting impact that resonates far beyond the autumn months.
