Make Your Mental Health a Priority
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), mental illness affects tens of millions of people each year. Each May we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month; however, it is important for all of us to maintain good mental health each and every day.
We all face challenges throughout our lives that can impact our mental well-being. Whether it be due to a physical illness, a loss, anxiety and stress, or even a pandemic like COVID-19, it’s important to recognize when you or someone you love is struggling and seek help.
Here are 10 signs when counseling and treatment can be helpful:
1. You are having a difficult time coping with life in general or cannot function.
2. You have impulsive or obvious mood swings.
3. You feel sad, blue, hopeless or down most of the time.
4. You worry excessively or feel anxious a lot of the time.
5. You cannot shake the impact of past or recent traumatic events.
6. You cannot concentrate.
7. You stop doing the things you like to do.
8. You have thoughts of hurting yourself or others.
9. You are turning to alcohol or drug use to deal with your feelings or pain.
10. You have suicidal thoughts.
“Each year, the support grows stronger for mental health awareness, yet we know that to continue the momentum of breaking down barriers, we must help increase awareness and understanding of mental health issues in the communities we serve,” said Bridget DeFiccio, LPC, Senior Vice President, Integrated Health Services. “Know that help is out there and can be very beneficial to feeling better and leading a productive life.”
